Yay! At our old house (that had painted wooden stairs leading into the basement), we would play "fetch" with Kozmo in the winter. We would shine a laser light at the bottom of the stairs and he would chase it up and down the stairs until he was all tuckered out. The wood was really sturdy and the paint a little funky and the lighting poor. So even though his nails scratched a little bit, it really didn't show. And Brian put in the Pergo floor at the bottom of the stairs and that stuff is impervious to dog nails!
